Tobacco: The Intriguing Story of Bermuda and Virginia

Tobacco (nicotiana tobaccum) most certainly originated in central and south Americas and the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus in 1492 sailed into Cuba’s Haia de Gibara looking for gold but found Indians who “smoked like chimneys”.  Rodrigo de Jerez who was with Columbus was the first European to smoke a role of tobacco from a cornhusk pipe. Upon his return to Spain he was jailed for smoking as it was considered sinful, but smoking became popular in Spain within a few years as it did elsewhere. Britain occupied Cuba in 1763 and began importing Cuban Cigars to Europe. Today “Havana cigars” are still reputed to be the best in the World.

Celebrating the mission of the The St. George’s Foundation, The World Heritage Centre is central to the promotion of the Town and Parish of St. George’s.

Lively, interactive histories are told through state-of-the art technology, participatory talks, historical re-enactments, and an ongoing programme of dramatic presentations, cultural activities and special events.

The World Heritage Centre is open to the public Monday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Admission fee is $5.00 (adults), $2.00 (children).

New Special Exhibit

The portrait of Anne Willing Bingham graced the first US coinage from 1796 to 1807.
She died in St. George’s in 1801 and is buried in St. Peter’s Church graveyard (her marble gravestone is remarkable and worth seeing!)  The complete coin collection is on display at the World Heritage Centre until June 2011.

RIP IT!

A New Look at an Old Town

This year, students became teachers. Each day they began by preparing a lesson plan/script and ended each session by Blogging about the days journey. They choose where we visited, who we spoke with, and how we presented Bermuda to the world. Each participant created a short video featuring a different aspect of our World Heritage Site ‘The Historic Town of St. George and its Related Fortifications.
