FORT WILLIAM MICRO FOREST

In October 2026 SGF contracted Island Construction Services to clear the dense growth of Chinese fan palms, Indian laurel and other invasives from the area in front of Fort William.

Understanding how quickly invasives return, SGF contacted the Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS) about planting a Micro Forest in the cleared area, and BZS welcomed the opportunity to collaborate.

Participants in the Department of Corrections Charity Work Release Programme worked with Bermuda General Contracting Services and DB Mini Excavating to prepare the ground for the new planting, and truckloads of soil and compost were brought in before an array of local flora was planted.

Nicholas Coelho, BZS Micro Forest Officer, said the collaboration with SGF was an example of how ecological restoration and cultural heritage can go hand-in-hand.

He explained, “Within this initiative, the Fort William micro forest plot demonstrates how invasive vegetation can be carefully replaced with native and endemic species to restore ecological function and strengthen biodiversity outcomes."

Over 140 bags of foliage and debris were weeded and hauled out of the moat of Fort George and trucked away. The SGF Weekday Warriors and participants of the Department of Corrections Charity Work Release Programme began the project in April and returned to the 19th century fort over the following two months.

The plants removed are all fast growing and prolific class 1 invasives - snake plant, wedding fern, Mexican pepper, Queensland umbrella tree and fountain grass.

In June and July Fort Albert was weeded, washed, trimmed and tidied, thanks to the Weekday Warriors and gentlemen from the Department of Corrections Charity Work Release Programme.

A team from the Grand Turk Enhancement & Sustainability Agency (GTESA), an organization in the Turks and Caicos Islands, visited Bermuda last month to explore the historical and architectural construction of Bermuda limestone cultural heritage sites. 

The recently formed agency is mandated to plan, develop, enhance, and sustainably manage Grand Turk’s heritage sites, historical assets, and community spaces through accountable project delivery and environmentally responsible practices.

The objective of the GTESA visit was to strengthen their capacity to restore and preserve the traditional limestone structures found throughout Grand Turk. 

As well as visiting Royal Naval Dockyard, Verdmont and a Bermuda stone quarry, the team spent time in Bermuda's UNESCO World Heritage Site visiting the Globe Museum, St Peter's Church and the military graveyard.  They were joined at Fort Albert by mason Dean Saunders, who has completed two restoration projects for SGF. 

Mr. Saunders shared his knowledge of remediating and restoring historic Bermuda stone sites using traditional methods with the GTESA team.

SGF and The Bermuda National Trust (BNT) were invited to present a webinar to members of World Heritage UK as part of a series showcasing World Heritage Sites in UK Overseas Territories.

BNT's Head of Cultural Heritage Dr. Charlotte Andrews spoke about Bermuda's World Heritage Site and the importance of cultural heritage, and SGF Manager Alison Outerbridge shared an overview of SGF projects taking place in St. George's.

World Heritage UK is an independent organisation representing the 35 UK World Heritage Sites and holds informative events and activities to ensure its members are informed of important developments in the World Heritage Sector.
