In June, Primary 5 students from 17 public schools took part in the St. George’s Foundation Education Programme, diving into Bermuda’s early settlement, maritime, and military history.
A highlight for the 200+ students was a field trip to Ferry Point Park — the first visit for over half of them. They explored key historical sites, including the ferry landing, Martello Tower, gunpowder magazine, and lime kiln.
The programme was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education to align with the P5 social studies curriculum.
Commissioner of Education Kalmar Richards praised the partnership, saying, “Community collaborations like this bring history to life and help students think critically about the world around them.” |

Earlier this summer, decades of overgrowth were cleared from Fort Albert Hill, uncovering the sidewalk and restoring easy pedestrian access to the historic 19th-century fort.
The final piece of industrial kitchen equipment — a relic from Club Med’s closure in 1988 — was also removed, thanks to the hard work of SGF’s Weekday Warrior volunteers, with support from Efficiency Limited.

The Weekday Warriors turned their focus to the 18th-century water catch at Ferry Point Park in June. Over two weeks, they cleared a dense growth of casuarina trees — removing two truckloads of branches and needles. The catchment and nearby Ferry Point Cottage were originally built in the 1780s to house British garrison troops, and thanks to the cleanup, their historical significance is now easier to appreciate. |

Exploring Bermuda's Armoured Forts

Richard Linzey, Royal Institute of British Architects (retired), and member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, was thrilled to finally visit Bermuda's two armoured fortifications, Fort Cunningham and Alexandra Battery, with SGF Chairman Stuart Smith and Dr. Edward Harris, MBE, JP. Richard then gave a fascinating talk to a full house of SGF members and guests on the history of British armoured fortifications, and explained the signficance of Fort Cunningham and Alexandra Battery in the evolution of British military engineering.

SGF is always seeking to collaborate with cultural partners and were happy to coordinate a tour of Fort Cunningham on Paget Island in June for the Naval Dockyards Society Special Conference delegates and National Museum of Bermuda interns and staff.
