FERRY POINT PARK GUNPOWDER MAGAZINE

Mason Dean Saunders, assisted by Mark Mills, completed his third project for SGF in February when he remediated the roof of the 19th-century gunpowder magazine below Martello Tower at Ferry Point Park. The top layer of the structure was crumbling following years of invasive root growth dislodging the stonework.

Mr. Mills joined the project from the Department of Public Lands and Buildings as part of the Department of Culture Apprenticeship Programme, which provided funding support for the project.

FORT ALBERT

Fort Albert is looking fantastic! The Weekday Warrior volunteers fixed fences, installed safety signage, cleared invasives and beautified the UNESCO World Heritage Site 19th century fort which was built in the mid 1800s to strengthen the defence of the Narrows.

FORT VICTORIA

A lumberjack crew of Weekday Warriors began removing the casuarina forest to the north of Fort Victoria, opening up the view originally seen by soldiers stationed at the 19th century fort.
The extent of the casuarina forest surrounding the fort can be seen in the aerial shot taken last month.

DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS
CHARITY WORK RELEASE PROGRAMME

The Department of Corrections Charity Work Release Programme has become a vital part of the restoration and maintenance of the UNESCO fortifications. We are grateful for the hard work of the gentlemen from the Co-Ed and Farm Facility who join the SGF volunteers each week.

PEOPLE

Rob Loewen spent countless hours at Fort Albert and Fort Victoria putting his skills from years managing construction sites to great use on behalf of SGF and Bermuda's built cultural sites.
Rob and his wife, Rev. Marie Loewen, contributed positive energy and enthusiasm to the St. George's community and we wish them the best on their return home to Canada.

SGF Chairman Stuart Smith joined the charity in 2022, bringing with him his team of Weekday Warrior volunteers who were engaged in halting the deteriorating condition of Fort Cunningham. He heads up the Heritage and Preservation Committee and with his team has spent three years tackling the massive overgrowth at Fort Albert, Fort Victoria, Fort William and Fort Cunningham.
