SUMMER UPDATE

INTRODUCING THE WEEKDAY WARRIORS!

The SGF is grateful to the Royal Bermuda Regiment and the enthusiastic volunteers who headed out to Fort Cunningham on a regular basis over past three months to tackle the forests of invasive casurina and Mexican pepper which are covering our UNESCO World Heritage Site fortifications. 

This work is critical to the preservation of our historic forts,

as the roots and debris undermine the structural integrity of

these defensive buildings.

FORT CUNNINGHAM FUNDRAISING TOURS

SGF members joined SGF's Heritage & Preservation's Stuart Smith and Chairman Peter Barrett for a tour of historic Fort Cunningham on Paget Island. The tours provided an exclusive opportunity to learn about the unique history of Fort Cunningham and the ongoing work of the St. George's Foundation to preserve and restore our UNESCO World Heritage Site fortifications. All proceeds went to costs associated with restoration of Fort Cunningham. Check out the video!

FORT VICTORIA CLEAN UP

The Weekday Warriors moved their attention and chainsaws to Fort Victoria in June, cleaning out sections of the hexagonal shaped outer moat which runs 900-feet, with an additional 150-feet of moat surrounding the southern ravelin. 

We are grateful to our volunteers, who are on a "summer break". If you would like to join the effort to preserve and restore our UNESCO sites, contact manager@sgf.bm.

A big push to clear the moat of Fort Victoria took place in the heat and humidity of July, thanks to the work of Amaro & Sons and an industrial chipper.  SGF removed three truckloads of household trash from around the fort, including mattresses and carpets.

SOMERSFIELD STUDENTS VISIT FORT VICTORIA

The St. George’s Foundation collaborated with Somersfield Academy  from June 15-17, giving students an opportunity to learn about and clean up Bermuda’s largest and most complex fort. Some of the students dug and scraped hard enough and discovered old coins! The students also received a history lesson about Bermuda’s largest and most complex fort which today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

SUPPORT FOR SGF

SGF Chairman Peter Barrett and Deputy Chairman Stuart Smith were invited to the Bermuda National Trust Heritage Awards which recognise individuals, organisations and groups which have worked for the benefit of Bermuda. SGF received a Preservation Award for the conservation and restoration of World Heritage Site forts and other military heritage at Ferry Reach and Ferry Point Park.

St. George's Rotary Club president Andrew Roberts presented SGF with a check in recognition of the restoration and preservation work carried out at Ferry Point Park. Members of SG Rotary took part in clearing overgrowth and invasive foliage from Ferry Island Fort in the spring.

Fit to Fly BDA made a donation to SGF as part of its corporate philanthropic giving programme.  Owner Claire McDevitt and founder Jennifer Burland-Adams donate five percent of their net proceeds to non-profits every month.
