RESTORATION & PRESERVATION |
Fort Albert (Eastern Redoubt) Fort Albert was built in the 1840's to defend the ships' channel at the southern approach to Fort St. Catherine. Preservation continues at the UNESCO fortification, with new jack posts installed as structural supports for the ceiling of the Keep, and maintenance taking place to eradicate weeds and invasive plants.
The Weekday Warriors are taking a break during the heat of the summer, however a skeleton crew are keeping the grass trim and ensuring the weeds are kept at bay. |
Thanks to the Bermuda Bluebird Society, Fort Albert has new residents - a bluebird box was installed this spring and quickly moved into by a nesting pair of bluebirds, who were not happy to have the box inspected!

Fort William (Western Redoubt)
The roof of Fort William has been cleared of casuarinas, Chinese fan palms and a thick carpet of needles and stumps, and the exterior fencing replaced.
Clearing the gutters on the roof of the fort was an arduous task, as years of built-up soil, debris and root systems were packed into the drainage channels. The Weekday Warriors were up to the job, assisted by Department of Corrections Work Release Programme participants, and the result of their hard work is remarkable! |
BELCO Volunteer Day A team of volunteers from Bermuda Electric Light Company joined Deputy Chairman Stuart Smith at Fort Victoria on April 22nd, halting the onset of weeds and invasive seedlings which undermine the structure of the 19th century fortification. The team hoed, dug, swept, chopped and cleared out bags of debris and foliage as part of the company's call to action on Earth Day. |

Somersfield M3 Community Project
Somersfield students Chayce, Charlie, Shiia, and Micah partnered with SGF for their The M3 Community Project - an inquiry-based initiative where students explore personal interests and address community needs.
The students spent time at Fort Victoria cutting back weeds and invasives and hosted a silent auction featuring stunning photos taken at the forts. The funds raised at the art event were donated to SGF for the preservation of Bermuda's UNESCO fortifications. |

Fort Albert was the focus of three Fundraising Tours in April and May, which saw members, guests, donors and history buffs spend time exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site fortification and learning about Bermuda's military-built heritage with SGF Chairman Peter Barrett. |

The International Women's Club of Bermuda joined SGF Chairman Peter Barrett for a tour of Fort Cunningham on April 17th. The IWCBDA members travelled by boat to Paget Island to explore the 19th century fortification and learn about this unique coastal defensive site and the strategy and historical context behind its construction. SGF is grateful for their donation to further the mission of the charity. |

Bermuda High School students joined SGF at Fort Albert in June as part of the school's STEAM week, which focuses on the essential role of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in educational development. The year 7 students toured the fort and learnt how the use of heavy equipment and engineering aided in the restoration of the historic site. And they contributed volunteer hours weeding in the moat - thank you Eloise, Harper, Xao, Zori, Ranique, Gwynie, Abigail and Ms. Noble!
