How do you extract a forest from a moat? That is what SGF pondered until coming up with the solution of lowering a mini excavator into the moat, followed by a dumpster! The floor of Fort Albert's moat can be seen after decades of being overgrown by Chinese fan palms and Mexican pepper. The pentagonal moated Fort Albert was completed shortly after 1842, and with Fort Victoria, commanded the channel along the east coast of St. George's Island.

As the volunteers hack back the forest of invasive plants and clear the perimeter of Fort Albert, a view of the channel is revealed. Forts Victoria and Albert were carved into Retreat Hill and positioned to defend the channel which leads to the Royal Naval Dockyard. |
Work began on Fort William last month, an early 19th century fort enveloped by casurinas and foliage. The fort was known as Gunpowder Cavern in the 1960's when a bar and restaurant inside the fort was a popular attraction for visitors and locals.
Chainsaws, a hi-lift, a digger and volunteer manpower exposed the fortification walls, and work is scheduled to remove the casuarina forest growing on the roof of the fortification. |
THE WEEKDAY WARRIORS
The transformation of our UNESCO World Heritage Site fortifications could not take place without the dedicated team of Weekday Warriors, led by SGF Deputy Chairman Stuart Smith. We are grateful for their hard work and enthusiasm! |

UNESCO World Heritage Site Research
Professor Jason Dittmer and Leverhulme International Professor Emma Waterton joined SGF Chairman Peter Barrett for a tour of Fort Albert and Fort Victoria on August 28. Jason and Emma are researchers with The Heritage for Global Challenges Research Centre at the University of York. They were hosted by The Bermuda National Trust as they embark on a new international research project which focuses on UNESCO World Heritage Sites which foreground the British Empire. The project compares how such sites are received, navigated, repurposed and understood by professionals, visitors and their host communities, which may enhance World Heritage management, interpretation and public engagement.
Collaboration with our cultural partners is a key component of The St George's Foundation mission of supporting Bermuda's UNESCO World Heritage Site Town of St. George and Related Fortifications. |

On November 8th SGF members and guests attended a fascinating talk by local author and historian Mike Marsh on the Gunpowder Plot at St. Peter's Church Edith Clair Spencer Hall. The evening began with a rendition of "Ver de Gunpowder Gone" by well known entertainer Mike Hind. All proceeds from the talk and sales of his book, The Defining Story of Bermuda's Great Gunpowder Plot 1775, were donated by Mr. Marsh to SGF's restoration and maintenance of St George's fortifications. Thank you, Mike! |
