FORT VICTORIA

The SGF Weekday Warriors returned to Fort Victoria to clear back the relentless growth of invasive plants which threaten the structural integrity of the fortification. Abandoned and underutilized historic sites are a magnet for Mexican pepper, cow cane grass, casuarina and asparagus fern - trees and grasses listed as category 1 invasive plants by the Department of the Environment. They adapt to a wide range of soil and growing conditions and grow quickly, with prolific seed production and dispersal.

FORT WILLIAM

Island Construction Services are clearing out the interior of Fort William, which has remained unused since the restaurant inside the fort closed decades ago. Rotting, mouldy wood and areas of asbestos are being removed using correct health and safety standards for disposal of the debris.

VOLUNTEERS

THE WEEKDAY WARRIORS

The transformation of our UNESCO World Heritage Site fortifications could not take place without the dedicated team of Weekday Warriors, led by SGF Chairman Stuart Smith. We are grateful for their hard work and enthusiasm.

COMMUNITY

DELOITTE

Deloitte dug into the weeds at Fort Victoria and Fort Albert with gusto during their Impact Day in November, making a difference to our UNESCO World Heritage Site fortifications.
Thank you, Deloitte!

UNESCO/ICOMOS Mission Report

The World Heritage Centre/ICOMOS Advisory mission to the Bermuda's UNESCO World Heritage Site Town of St George and Related Fortifications submitted their report to the Bermuda Government last month following their visit to the island in March.
Stakeholders operating within the Heritage Site, including SGF, were invited to take part in discussions during the visit, and mission representatives viewed Fort Victoria and Fort Albert, fortifications which were inaccessible three years ago.
The lengthy report was tabled in the House of Assembly in November and is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of our World Heritage Site. Included in the report are recommendations for a review of the St. Regis Bermuda condominium development.
