The SGF Weekday Warriors returned to Fort Victoria to clear back the relentless growth of invasive plants which threaten the structural integrity of the fortification. Abandoned and underutilized historic sites are a magnet for Mexican pepper, cow cane grass, casuarina and asparagus fern - trees and grasses listed as category 1 invasive plants by the Department of the Environment. They adapt to a wide range of soil and growing conditions and grow quickly, with prolific seed production and dispersal.

Island Construction Services are clearing out the interior of Fort William, which has remained unused since the restaurant inside the fort closed decades ago. Rotting, mouldy wood and areas of asbestos are being removed using correct health and safety standards for disposal of the debris. |
THE WEEKDAY WARRIORS
The transformation of our UNESCO World Heritage Site fortifications could not take place without the dedicated team of Weekday Warriors, led by SGF Chairman Stuart Smith. We are grateful for their hard work and enthusiasm. |
