Mason and Tradition Bearer Dean Saunders worked with an apprentice, Mark Mills, to remediate the Ferry Point gun powder magazine as part of the St. George’s Foundation’s efforts to preserve the historic town of St. George and its related fortifications.
The Ferry Point gun powder magazine was built in the 1820s and used as the main magazine for St. George’s. It used to store up to 200 barrels of gun powder.
Over time, this structure had become badly damaged, with years of invasive plant growth dislodging the stonework.
The restoration of this historic magazine provided an excellent opportunity for Mark to learn stonework skills that are rarely still practiced, but form an important part of our heritage.
